Note: Untagging yourself only works on Instagram Feed Posts, Reels, and IGTV (pictures or videos) but not currently on Stories.

How to untag yourself on Instagram (Android/iOS)

  1. Open up the Instagram app on your smartphone
  2. Navigate to your Profile via the Profile icon in the bottom-right
  3. Tap the icon to the right of the Feed, Reels, and IGTV icons (the ‘Tagged’ icon)
  4. Locate the post, reel, or IGTV video which you wish to untag yourself from, and tap on it
  5. Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right, and from the pop-up menu, select ‘Tag options…’
  6. Now, select ‘Remove me from post’
  7. Repeat as necessary

Tip: You can remove yourself from multiple tagged posts in one go by tapping on any tagged post, then tapping the blue ‘Edit’ button in the top right, selecting all of the posts you want to remove yourself from, and then hitting ‘Remove’. On this screen, you can also toggle ‘Manually approve tags’ to ON, so that in the future you are only tagged in those posts which you approve.

And there you have it! Whether individually or multiple posts at once, you can quickly untag yourself from any Feed Post, Reel, or IGTV video you like! For any additional queries, see our FAQs below.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I want to untag myself on Instagram?

There are any number of reasons you might want to untag yourself from a Feed Post on Instagram, but the most common reasons are that either you don’t like how you look in the post and don’t want it to appear on your profile, or that you don’t feel the post represents you accurately or fairly, and wish to remove yourself from it.

What happens when I untag myself on Instagram?

When you untag yourself from a post on Instagram, your name is removed from the post, meaning no one who now views the post will be able to tap on it and see your account tagged – thus limiting the ability of people who view the post to access your account.

Furthermore, the post will be removed from the tagged section of your profile, where are stored all of the Feed Post images in which you are tagged.

Can I apply the same method of untagging to stories in which I’m tagged?

No, unfortunately not. You can ‘Report’ a story in which you’re tagged if you think the content or the tagging merits reporting, but as it stands there is no way for you to untag yourself from a story someone has tagged you in.

If you really want to, but you don’t want to ‘Report’ the user or the story, then we recommend you contact the user via Direct Message and ask them to take down the story, explaining your reasoning to them.
