Note: You can only unmute and mute posts on the mobile/tablet Instagram app, you cannot do so on the website accessed via a desktop device.

How to Unmute Posts on Instagram

  1. Open up the Instagram app on your smartphone or tablet device, and sign into your profile if prompted
  2. Using the magnifying glass ‘Search’ tool located along the bottom of the screen, search for the account of the person whose posts you wish to unmute (and thus the person whose posts you previously muted)

  3. Once on their profile page, tap the ‘Following’ badge beneath their bio
  4. Next, tap ‘Mute’
  5. Finally, toggle ‘Posts’ to OFF (it should currently be blue to indicate that the posts are muted; turning it to grey indicates that they are now unmuted)

And that’s it! It’s really as simple as that. You can mute and unmute the posts and/or stories of however many accounts you like via the same method, and no one will ever know you’re doing it.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to mute or unmute posts on Instagram?

Instagram is one of the world’s most popular image and video-sharing social networks and has now accumulated some ten years of experience in the field. Beloved by millions of daily users all around the world, it is a wonderful platform to interact with friends, family, and even celebrities and personalities with who you would otherwise never come into contact.

But Instagram, like so much social media, is also a platform for posturing, and for fomenting relationships with others, even when one doesn’t really want to. In other words, it is unfortunately often the case that you may no longer wish to interact with someone on Instagram, but also don’t want to create any drama by doing something as drastic as unfollowing them.

In such situations, you can instead ‘mute’ individuals – either muting their posts, stories, or both. It allows you to retain the individual as a follower/one of the accounts you follow, whilst hiding the content they post from your feed. You no longer have to see the posts that a specific person shares, but they’ll still think you can since you still follow them.

Why would I want to unmute posts on Instagram?

Of course, you may end up accidentally muting someone’s posts, if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. Equally possible is the eventuality that you muted someone a while ago who had wronged or upset you, but with whom you’ve now made reparations. In such circumstances, you may well wish to ‘unmute’ that person’s posts.

Similarly, you may have been taking a break from excessive Instagram usage and decided to limit the posts you were shown on your feed. But now, once again ready to tackle the world of social media head-on, you wish to unmute those you previously muted. Whatever your reason, we’re here to show you how.

Will the person know that I’ve unmuted them on Instagram?

No. One of the perks of muting or unmuting someone’s posts is that they will be none the wiser.

Can I tell if someone’s muted me and unmute myself?

No. The whole reason Instagram gives you the option to mute people is that it allows you to discreetly limit what you see from any given account, without them being alerted. To allow you to see who has or hasn’t muted you would entirely defeat the purpose. Furthermore, to allow you to unmute yourself would override that person’s private decision, and their autonomous right to see only the content they wish to see. Hence, you cannot see who has or hasn’t muted you, and you cannot unmute yourself.

Can I re-mute someone I’ve accidentally unmuted?

Of course, simply head back to their profile, tap the ‘Following’ badge beneath their bio, tap ‘Mute’ and then toggle ON ‘Posts’ and/or ‘Stories’
