How to Turn on an Apple Watch

Smartwatches have become increasingly popular over the last couple of years, and Apple seems to constantly lead the pack. Whether it’s their sleek and simple design, the convenience of always staying up to date, or even the perks of tracking your exercise performance, Apple Watches have truly become the new normal, and a must-have accessory for any tech enthusiast.

However, if it’s your first time using an Apple Watch, you might have some issues getting used to this accessory, and figuring out the way it operates. So, let’s start with the basics. Here is how you can turn your watch on, as well as some additional settings that might be useful:

Switching the Watch on or off

If you simply need to switch your new Watch on or off, then follow this easy guide below:

  • Switching on – In case the Watch is currently switched off, simply click and hold the button on the side of your Watch up until you notice the Apple logo (a blank, dark screen could show up at first). You will know that your Watch is switched on after the watch face shows up.
  • Switching off – If you ever need to switch off your Watch in the future, all you have to do is click and hold the button on the side of your Watch up until you notice the Power Off bar. Then, simply slide the bar to switch off.

Note: The Watch can’t be switched off when it’s connected to a charger; you will have to disconnect it first.

Utilizing the ‘Always On’ feature

In case you have a Watch Series 5 or 6, your device will come with a feature called ‘Always On’. This allows your smartwatch to show the face at all times, even when your hand is held down. The Watch then returns to its full functions when the hand is raised.

Here’s how to turn this feature on:

  1. On your Watch, click on Settings (gear icon).
  2. Click on Display and Brightness, and then select Always On.
  3. Here, switch on this feature.
  4. If you wish you could also tap to Hide Sensitive Complications, allowing you to conceal any messages, events, or other personal information when your hand is held down.

Waking the Watch display

In case you simply wish to wake your Watch up after it’s been in stand-by mode when your hand was held down, you can do one of the following:

  • Lift your hand to automatically wake up your Watch. It will sleep once again when you put your hand down.
  • Click on the Digital Crown, or touch the Watch display to wake it.
  • Alternatively, you could also turn up the Digital Crown. If this hasn’t already been set, you could find it under General Settings, in the Wake Screen section.

Note: If you don’t wish for your Watch to wake whenever you lift your hand, you could also adjust these settings in the Wake Screen section.

Keeping the display turned on for longer

In case you want the display on your Watch to be turned on for a longer period of time after you wake it, you can do so by following these steps:

  1. On your Watch, click on Settings (gear icon).
  2. Click on General, and then select Wake Screen.
  3. Here, simply select to ‘Wake for 70 Seconds’.

And there you have it! Whether you just want to switch your new Watch on, or even change some additional settings to make your smartwatch more practical, you easily do it in just a couple of quick and simple steps.
