How To Tag A Business On Facebook

Facebook began as a means of connecting friends, meeting new people, and joining together in online communities of like-minded individuals from all around the world. Since its inception, however, it has continued to grow and expand, and with this expansion, the ways in which this most famous of social networking platforms is used has grown too.

Facebook is popular now as much with businesses – as a marketing and even sales platform – as once it was with individuals. As such, most businesses see having an active, engaging (and engaged) Facebook account as standard practice. Unfortunately, however, the organic exposure which regular posting on Facebook might once have garnered, now does so less and less, as Facebook places more and more onus on paid advertising.

Thankfully, there is still a way to generate interest in your business on Facebook without having to pay. Furthermore, as a customer or individual, you can use this same method to get in touch with, or to promote a business – maybe one you’ve long been a patron of or one you want to learn more about.

I’m talking about ‘tagging’ a business on Facebook. There are many ways to do so, which might not be clear at first, especially to new Facebook users, but are in fact very simple. To do so, just follow the below steps. (Scroll to find the appropriate How-To based on whether you are using the website or mobile app, and whether you wish to tag a business in a post, comment, story, or photo).

Tagging a business in a post/photo on the Facebook website

  1. Open up your preferred browser and navigate to the Facebook website. If prompted, log in to your account (if you are new to Facebook, you’ll have to sign up first).
  2. Navigate to the Home page by clicking the house-shaped icon at the top of the site.
  3. To tag a business in a post or photo, first, click the + sign in the top-right hand corner. This will bring up a drop-down menu.
  4. Click Post. You will now be directed to create your post. Note that you can select who can see your post once it’s published – whether the Public, your Facebook Friends, or only a chosen few.

  5. To tag a business you begin by typing the @ symbol and then typing the name of the business you wish to tag. As you type, a list of potential matches will auto-populate. Select the appropriate business from this list.

  6. If you wish to tag a business in a photo, first add the photo(s) to your post by selecting the green photo/video icon above the Post button. Upload your selected photo, hover over it in the post, and click Edit. On the left hand side, click the Tag photo button. Now, click on the photo to begin tagging your business. Do so by typing the @ symbol followed by the business’s name, and selecting the appropriate business from the generated list.

  7. Once you are happy with your post or photo, publish it by clicking the big blue Post button underneath. The business you have tagged will receive a notification alerting them to the tag. Also, anyone who reads your post can now click on your tag to be directed through to the business’s Facebook page.

Tag a business in a story on the Facebook website

  1. Open up your preferred browser and navigate to the Facebook website. If prompted, log in to your account (if you are new to Facebook, you’ll have to sign up first).
  2. Navigate to the Home page, by clicking the house-shaped icon at the top of the site.
  3. To tag a business in a story, first click the + sign in the top-right hand corner. This will bring up a drop-down menu.
  4. Click Story. You will now be directed to create your story as either a photo or text story. Select whichever is appropriate.

  5. Once you have selected the image(s) or background you wish to use, it’s time to add text. On the left side of the screen there is a text box. To tag a business here, you must type the @ symbol followed by the business’s name. Note that, unlike with other Facebook tags, when creating a story on the website, no list of potential matches will appear. You will have to ensure that you are inputting the business’s Facebook tag correctly.

  6. When you are satisfied with your story, publish it by clicking the big blue Share to Story button in the bottom left. The business you have tagged will receive a notification alerting them to the tag. Also, anyone who reads your post can now click on your tag to be directed through to the business’s Facebook page.

Tag a business in a comment on the Facebook website

  1. Open up your preferred browser and navigate to the Facebook website. If prompted, log in to your account (if you are new to Facebook, you’ll have to sign up first).
  2. Navigate to the Home page, by clicking the house-shaped icon at the top of the site.
  3. To tag a business in a comment, first find a post you wish to comment on. For businesses wishing to drive traffic to their own page, it’s a good idea to find relevant communities or pages, and leave comments on posts you find there, tagging your own business.
  4. Underneath the selected post, select the Comment button. Now, write your comment. To tag a business, be it yours or someone else’s, begin by typing the @ symbol followed by the name of the business. As you type, a list of potential matches will auto-populate. Select the appropriate business from this list.

  5. Once you are happy with your comment, publish it by clicking the big blue Post button underneath. The business you have tagged will receive a notification alerting them to the tag. Also, anyone who reads your post can now click on your tag to be directed through to the business’s Facebook page.

Tag a business in a post/photo on the Facebook app

  1. Open the Facebook app on your phone, and if necessary, log-in or sign-up.
  2. Navigate to Home by clicking the house-shaped icon in the top-left.
  3. To create a post, click Status beneath ‘What’s on your mind’ at the top of the page. To post a photo, click Photo (to the right of Status).

  4. Now it’s time to create your post or upload your photo. Once you’re ready to tag a business in a post, begin by typing the @ symbol followed by the name of the business you wish to tag. A list of potential matches will auto-populate. Select the appropriate business from the list.
  5. To tag a business in a photo, upload or take your desired photo, and then click the Tag icon at the top of the image (it looks like a person’s head and shoulders with a price tag attached). Tap on the photo, and begin typing the name of the business. A list of potential matches will auto-populate. Select the appropriate business from the list.

  6. Once you are happy with your post/photo, publish it by clicking the Post button in the top right (for photos, first click Done). The business you have tagged will receive a notification alerting them to the tag. Also, anyone who reads your post can now click on your tag to be directed through to the business’s Facebook page.

  2. Navigate to Home by clicking the house-shaped icon in the top-left.

If you decide on a text-based post, you can tag a business by typing the @ symbol followed by the business’s name, and selecting the appropriate business from the auto-populated list. If creating a photo-based story, you should tap anywhere on the picture to begin typing, type the @ symbol followed by the business’s name, and select the appropriate business from the auto-populated list. You may be tempted to select the Tag people icon, but note that this does not work as effectively in tagging businesses as just writing on the image does.
