Frequently asked questions
What is Facebook?
Founded over a decade ago, Facebook is one of the world’s largest (if not the largest) social networking applications. On Facebook you can connect with friends, family, colleagues, or people from all across the world, especially handy if you want to talk with other fans of your favorite book, TV show, or sport, for example.
Facebook is a meeting place and a place to plan events, a place for organizations to hold meetings, for you to upload your photos and memories to, a place to keep in touch with old friends and new, and generally just a pretty versatile social network. As a company, Facebook also owns several other major social networking apps, such as Instagram and WhatsApp.
What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is one of the world’s leading and most popular instant messaging (IM) social networking apps, now owned and operated by Facebook. WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption on chats, meaning that your conversations with friends, family, and colleagues are kept safe and private. WhatsApp allows you to connect with anyone who has the app via their mobile numbers, provided you have a connection to the internet.
Through WhatsApp, you can create and join groups, created for special occasions, or just to keep grouped together a particular group of friends, or a household, say.
You can connect with as many people as you like through WhatsApp, in as many different combinations of groups, and luckily, all of your conversations and their histories can easily be backed up to the cloud, meaning even if you were to lose or break your phone, you could still retrieve your WhatsApp conversations when you next were able to.
If you’ve found a video you really like, and you want to tell all and sundry about it, then sure, you might be content to just share it as a post on Facebook itself.
However, if the video is more personal, or it reminds you specifically about one person or one group of people, who you more often than not communicate with via WhatsApp, then sharing that video/a link to that video with said WhatsApp contacts is the best way of ensuring that they get to see what it is that’s made you smile/laugh/cry.
Only the people who you’ve shared that video with on WhatsApp will be able to follow the link to said video, so don’t worry too much – you’re unlikely to accidentally share a Facebook video link with the wrong WhatsApp contact, and anyway, if you do, simply go into that WhatsApp conversation, tap and hold on the video link/message you sent, and from the pop-up options select Delete > Delete for everyone.
Having said all that, it’s possible that your WhatsApp contact may only be able to see the video on Facebook if they themselves have and use a Facebook account.
Most videos should be viewable even if they don’t, but say you’re sharing a video posted by another Facebook friend whose account is set to ‘Private’, chances are your WhatsApp contact(s) won’t be able to watch the video, unless they are also on Facebook and also a friend of this ‘Private’ video poster.
