Frequently asked questions
Why would I want to send music on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is one of the world’s leading messaging platforms, beloved for its ease of use as well as the privacy afforded by its end-to-end encryption. Since WhatsApp is owned by megacorporation Facebook (which also owns Instagram among other things), it is connected to and can thus be used in conjunction with a great many apps available on your phone or desktop.
One of the great features of WhatsApp is that you can share just about any media you want with your contacts – whether in individual chats or on a group chat, for all to see. You could send pictures, videos, GIFs, documents, and links, but you could also send music.
Sending music to a friend is one of the oldest means of cementing friendships. I’m sure that way back in the days before we hunter-gatherers even settled down in farming communities, we were exchanging songs, chants, and simple tunes on whistles made of bone.
Today, we continue to do just that, forming friendships by exchanging our favorite songs, bands, and albums. Doing so on WhatsApp is just another method of this ancient practice.
What kind of music can I send on WhatsApp, and what’s the easiest method?
You can send just about any music on WhatsApp, but it does depend on what form you wish to send it as to which method you’re going to want to use.
You can send music files via WhatsApp if you have the MP3 or WAV or other file downloaded on your device and ready to send, however, if the file is too big, there may be an issue. Alternatively, if you wanted to send an entire album that you have downloaded, or a playlist even, you’re going to find the process laborious if you try and send each file individually.
Thus, you can also send music to your WhatsApp contacts by sending them a link from a music streaming service – Spotify, say. This way, you can send whole albums and playlists without a hitch.
Furthermore, you could send music from YouTube, via a link again (usually you can do so straight from the YouTube app with just one tap). For those who maybe don’t have or use Spotify or other streaming services, this is a safe option.
Can my contacts listen to the music straight away when I send it to them on WhatsApp?
This again depends on how you send it. If you share music from Spotify, then your contacts can only listen to it if they also have Spotify, and even then it will take them off the WhatsApp app to listen to the song(s).
If you send an MP3 or WAV file, there’s a chance that your contacts could play the music directly in WhatsApp, but again, if the file’s too large, they’ll be redirected to their device’s default music player app to listen to it.
The best method, if you’re really intent on your contacts being able to play the music directly in WhatsApp, is to share the music from YouTube. YouTube and WhatsApp are integrated so that when a YouTube link is tapped by a contact (provided they have the YouTube app installed), they’ll be able to watch the video and thus listen to the music right there in the app.
