FAQs
What is a Google Meet session?
A Google Meet session is a video and chat-based call, like a Zoom or Skype call, hosted on the Google Cloud platform. It is part of Google’s suite of programs and software which can be accessed for free by any free Google account holder online. Google Meet sessions are utilised by all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons.
You can host virtual parties, work meetings, lectures and more on Google Meet, and there is (unlike Zoom) no time limit to the sessions. Members of any session can chat via text or voice, with video or without. You can even record Google Meet sessions for a variety of purposes.
Google Meet sessions can be impromptu, or scheduled well in advance. They can be accessed via Google Calendar, Google Hangouts, Google Meet, or Gmail, and provided you’re invited you don’t even need to have a Google account to join a Google Meet.
What devices can I use to join a Google Meet session?
A better question might be: what devices can’t you join a Google Meet session from? The answer is: you can join a Google Meet session from any smart device – phone, tablet, desktop or laptop. All you need to join a Google Meet session is some means of sending messages, be it keyboard, microphone, and/or camera.
Can I join any Google Meet session, or do I have to be invited?
The answer to this might surprise you. As a Google account holder, you can actually join just about any Google Meet session, provided you know the chatroom name. You don’t have to be invited to join (though it always helps). The only exception to this rule is whether or not the meeting host has changed the privacy settings of the Google Meet session. They can, if they so choose, limit who can and cannot join. If you are restricted, you will not be able to join unless invited.
