How To Delete Profiles On An Xbox 360

Whether your Xbox’s storage is clogged up with dead profiles, you want to remove your ex-boyfriend’s profile from your Xbox, or you were sold a secondhand 360 which still has the original user’s profile downloaded on it, we’ve got you covered.

To learn how to delete profiles on an Xbox 360, simply follow our easy step-by-step guide below. For any additional information or queries, see our FAQs at the end of this article.

Note: Deleting a profile from your Xbox 360 does not delete that Microsoft account, it only removes the downloaded profile from your device. To fully delete a profile/Microsoft account, you’ll have to do so via the Xbox/Microsoft website online.

How to delete profiles on an Xbox 360

  1. Turn on your Xbox 360 and sign out of any accounts you wish to delete (if necessary)
  2. From the home screen, scroll along until you get to Settings
  3. Once in Settings, click ‘System’
  4. Now, click ‘Storage’
  5. Choose whichever storage device from the list holds the unwanted profile(s) – or choose ‘All Devices’
  6. Now, scroll down to and click on ‘Profiles’
  7. Once in the list of profiles downloaded to your device’s storage, find the profile(s) you wish to delete, and press A on it/them
  8. Now, hit ‘Delete’
  9. You’ll be faced with a question: ‘Delete Profile Only’, or ‘Delete Profile and Items’, meaning the profile and all of the information associated with it (this includes game save data). Think carefully before making your selection, because either decision is permanent. Hit A on whichever option you choose.
  10. Your Xbox 360 will begin the deletion process. Repeat as necessary once complete.

And there you have it! Whether you’ve got one or one hundred unwanted profiles on your Xbox 360, you can quickly and easily delete them all by following our step-by-step guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I want to delete profiles on an Xbox 360?

There are lots of reasons why you might wish to delete profiles from your Xbox 360, but one of the most common reasons is that you’ve got lots of other people’s profiles downloaded onto your 360 (perhaps you’ve had friends round to play Xbox and they downloaded their own profiles onto your device), which you want to get rid of.

Alternatively, you may well have established a new profile which is now not just your primary profile, but the only one you use, and as such you want to remove the old ones. Of course, there’s always the chance that you bought your Xbox 360 second hand, and the seller forgot to remove their profile before sending the device to you.

Whatever your reasoning, deleting profiles on an Xbox 360 is a fairly straightforward process. To do so, simply follow our tutorials laid out above.

What happens when I delete profiles on an Xbox 360?

When you delete profiles on an Xbox 360 the decision is permanent – in other words, you’ll lose the profile from your Xbox’s storage entirely, which may or may not include saved games and purchased items, too.

Thankfully, you do get a choice when deleting Xbox 360 profiles: whether to delete the profile only (thus saving saved game information etc. on your device), or whether to delete the profile and any saved games, items and more associated with it.

We highly recommend you take time to consider these options when deleting profiles, since any saved game data you delete cannot be recovered, no matter what.

Can I recover accidentally deleted profiles on an Xbox 360?

Yes, thankfully you can. However, if you chose to delete the saved game files (items) when deleting the profile in the first place, then even if you recover the profile, you will not recover the saved game data, nor any items purchased by that profile on the Xbox Microsoft Marketplace.

To recover accidentally deleted profiles, you only need to re-download the profile. Make sure your Xbox 360 is connected to the internet, and then sign out of your current profile. Now, navigate to ‘Download Profile’ after pressing the Guide button (middle ‘X’ logo button on controller). At the bottom of the ‘Download Profile’ screen, press ‘Download Profile’ again. Now enter the email address associated with the accidentally deleted profile. Finally, enter the password associated with that email address, when prompted.

So long as you remember the email address and password attached to the accidentally deleted account, you can quickly recover it using this method.
