What are roles in Discord?
Discord’s permission system is built around different roles, which you could assign to the members of your server. You could either hand these roles out to particular channels that are on your server, or to the entire server itself.
There are nearly 30 different types of roles available on Discord, divided between voice, text, and general options, allowing members to do anything from attaching files and managing nicknames and emojis, to even kicking out or banning other members.
Adding different roles in Discord
Once you’ve made your own server on Discord, it’s now time to include some permissions. Here’s how to do it:
- Right-click on the picture of your server.
- From the drop-down menu, press Server Settings, and then choose Roles.
- At the beginning of the Roles section, press the “+” icon.
- Now, you’ll have the opportunity to create a name for this new role, and to give it a specific color.
- Then, you will need to set certain permissions by switching on the toggle next to any specific permission you would like to add.
- Finally, save these changes, and the new role will be added.
Assigning roles to members of the server

Deleting different roles in Discord

- Right-click on the picture of your server.
- From the drop-down menu, press Server Settings, and then choose Roles.
- Locate the role you’d like to delete, and click on it.
